Loyalty Software for Square, Clover or Toast: 6 Questions to Ask Before You Connect

5 min read

Connecting loyalty software to Square, Clover or Toast pays off only when the connection gives you something you can't get another way, and the vendor can prove it has the access your POS requires. Six questions decide it: whether you need integration at all, what your POS demands from the vendor, what happens to members if you switch POS, how customers join, what the full monthly bill is, and who carries the data risk. meed has a direct stake in this. We built wallet loyalty that runs without POS integration, so we've had to be precise about what a POS connection is actually worth.

TL;DR

  • A POS connection gives you automatic earning from transactions. Receipt scanning and NFC tap-in cover much of that without one.

  • Square, Toast and Clover each control API access differently. Ask which requirements your vendor has met.

  • If members are stored in your POS, plan for the day you switch.

  • Price everything: POS tier, loyalty fee, per-location fees.

  • Ask for compliance documents in writing.

Do you need your loyalty program connected to your POS at all?

The first question is whether a connection earns its place. Integration is a method, not the goal.

The goal is a regular getting credit for a visit without anyone at the counter thinking about it.

A 2025 SumUp survey found 73.2% of US micro and small businesses run no formal loyalty program. Most of them don't need a perfect integration. They need something running.

POS integration guides describe what a connection gives you [loyally.ai]:

  • Stamps or points earned automatically from each transaction

  • Purchase data tied to a member

  • Rewards applied at checkout

Routes to the same outcome without a connection:

  • Receipt scanning. The customer photographs the receipt, AI reads it, the stamp is added. Stamps can be based on spend.

  • NFC or QR tap-in. One tap, one stamp.

  • Staff stamping from an app on a phone or tablet.

meed works this way. It has no POS integration today, and direct POS integrations are in development based on demand. If you need item-level data from Toast flowing into your loyalty tool this month, meed isn't that tool yet.

What does Square, Clover or Toast require before a loyalty vendor can connect?

If integration is the right call, the next question is whether your vendor has met your POS's requirements. Each system controls access differently.

POS

How vendors connect

What's required

Square

REST-based Loyalty API and Webhooks

An active Square Loyalty subscription on the seller's account (Square developer docs)

Toast

Partner API

Specific scopes and a signed partner agreement

Clover

REST API and Android SDK

OAuth authentication and Clover App Market approval

The scale is real. Anyone choosing a loyalty program for restaurants is likely facing this exact decision.

  • Square loyalty program add-ons: confirm which paid subscription the integration needs on your account.

  • Toast loyalty program options: ask whether the partner agreement is signed, with the scopes you need.

  • Clover loyalty program apps: a clover rewards app listed in the App Market has passed Clover's approval.

"Integration coming soon" is not an integration.

That standard applies to us too.

What happens to your members if you change POS?

Access tells you whether a connection works today. The harder question is whether your regulars survive your next system decision.

Think of phone numbers before number portability. The number belonged to the carrier, so switching meant a new number and losing anyone who didn't update. Loyalty stored in POS customer records can work the same way: the history sits with the system, so moving systems means moving members or losing them.

Ask the vendor:

  • Can I export members with current balances?

  • Do you support other POS systems, or only this one?

  • Does the customer's card change if my POS does?

meed's card is stored in the customer's Apple or Google Wallet, not locked to your POS. A POS change doesn't touch it.

How does a customer join your loyalty program at the counter?

None of this matters if regulars don't sign up, and sign-up happens mid-rush, not in a demo.

  • Phone number at the till. Staff ask, type, confirm. Seconds added to every sale.

  • App download. The customer installs something for your café. Many won't.

  • QR code to wallet. A qr code loyalty program puts a few seconds of work on the customer's phone, with nothing to install.

An apple wallet loyalty card or a google wallet loyalty program card sits next to boarding passes. No app to open.

Count the taps on your own phone. Your Saturday queue will judge the rest.

meed customers join by QR, NFC tap or link in the mobile browser.

What will a POS-connected loyalty program cost each month?

Once joining works, cost is next, and an integrated setup can bill from more than one place.

  • The POS plan the integration requires

  • The loyalty subscription

  • Per-location fees

  • Hardware, such as NFC tags

  • Staff time at the counter

Check current square loyalty pricing on Square's own pages before comparing. We won't quote it here, because we can't verify it. Same for Toast and Clover add-ons.

For reference, meed's Free plan covers up to 50 members with core features: digital cards, QR enrollment, wallet integration and nearby notifications. Pro is US$59/month or US$590/year, with unlimited members, two locations included and US$39 per extra location.

Who is responsible for customer data when loyalty connects to your POS?

The last question gets skipped most, and every connection is one more place customer data travels.

Ask which of these apply to the vendor, and which it can document:

  • PCI DSS for payment data handling

  • SOC 2 for cloud security and operational controls

  • Regional privacy rules such as GDPR and CCPA

Ask for documents, not adjectives. Where data is stored. How a customer gets deleted.

meed calls its approach Anonymised Loyalty: "We give you the valuable behavioural data, the 'what', while we securely look after the customer's personal identity, the 'who.'"
